About the club
Western Suburbs in Brisbane were formed by a merger of the North Brisbane and Toowong clubs in 1915. Known as the "Mud and Bloods" for their red and black colour scheme, Wests picked up their first BRL trophy in 1916. In 1922, the first BRL competition played as a separate entity to the QRL, Wests smashed the opposition with a 9-0-1 record through the regular season to go undefeated to the premiership. The team moved to Purtell Park, named for Wests stalwart and Queensland representative, Tom Purtell, in Bardon in 1973. The last two BRL premierships came in the same years as the Broncos back-to-back premierships in the NSWRL competition and would add a Queensland Cup runners-up to their palmares in 1998. After a disastrous 2003 Cup campaign, with a 0-22 record, Wests departed from top flight Queensland football. Today, the Panthers play in the BRL competition in affiliation with Norths and operate as a juniors development club. Past Panthers include Paul Vautin, Adriam Lam and Tony Currie.
